New Year, New Goals

The new school year started in January in Guatemala. This year we are sponsoring 8 students in college Two are studying law, two are studying to be teachers, two are studying to be doctors, one is studying to be a nurse and one is studying construction.

This year we are assisting 34 “pequenos”--kindergarten and elementary school students–by purchasing backpacks, shoes and school supplies for them. This is up from 22 last year. In junior high, we currently sponsor 18 students, and we sponsor 17 attending high school. This brings us to a total of 77 students, up slightly from last year’s total of 68.

We’re A Nonprofit!

It’s official–the Atitlan Alliance is now a non-profit! We are delighted to announce that the IRS awarded us non-profit status in 2022 after a very short application process. This means that future donations to our project can be tax-deductible. Our working group (Delores Nims, Bill and Laura Emery, Ellen Craine, Spencer Neyland and Rea Thomson) has now become a non-profit Board of Directors. For future contributions, checks should be made out to The Atitlan Alliance and mailed to 1467 Siskyou Blvd #348, Ashland, OR 97520. In order to facilitate our bookkeeping and to ensure that your donation is tax-deductible, please do not send money directly to our bank account in Guatemala. Over $10,000 was contributed by generous donors for the 2022 school year, resulting full scholarships for 16 students, and covering additional school expenses for them and their siblings.

Service Projects

The families of our scholarship students assembled on the banks of Lake Atitlan to participate in the Atitlan Alliance’s first service project. For several hours, parents, students and a grandfather worked together to clean up trash from the beach. The response from the parents was enthusiastic–all but two families attended. It was Rosario’s idea to offer the families an opportunity to contribute to their community, as a way of “paying it forward.” She has plans for future service projects and now has support from four or five mothers who want to help her!
