What's New

The new school year started in January in Guatemala. This year we are sponsoring 8 students in college Two are studying law, two are studying to be teachers, two are studying to be doctors, one is studying to be a nurse and one is studying construction.

This year we are assisting 34 “pequenos”--kindergarten and elementary school students–by purchasing backpacks, shoes and school supplies for them. This is up from 22 last year. In junior high, we currently sponsor 18 students, and we sponsor 17 attending high school. This brings us to a total of 77 students, up slightly from last year’s total of 68.

 Once a month, our Program Director meets with groups of parents, based on the age of their children. At the meetings, she checks in on the students' progress and provides information on topics such as behavior management, supporting your student in school, family dynamics, and birth control. The meetings have become something of a parent support group, and Rosa reports that many friendships among mothers have developed.

She also meets with groups of students separately from their parents. She has become a mentor and confidante to many of them.

Rosa holds service projects for Atitlan Alliance students and their families. The purpose is to offer a way for scholarship recipients to give back to their community. Service projects usually involve cleaning up trash from the beach or planting trees. The service projects have proven to be another way for families to connect with one another.
